[...] July 22, 2009 by jeremy danté after reading the reported headline, i gasped: “milan takes fashion crown from new york”. the report comes from the global language monitor & the survey which determined the results is annual. new york has reigned supreme for the last five years & now the rankings have shifted. though milan is now no. 1, new york holds steadily the no.2 ranking & following behind are paris, rome, london & los angeles. though some of the listings within the top thrity are extremely questionable, the results are a result of a word tracker. in other words, the results were taken by ”GLM’s Predictive Quantities Index, a proprietary algorithm that tracks words and phrases in print and electronic media, on the Internet and throughout the blogosphere. The words and phrases are tracked in relation to their frequency, contextual usage and appearance in global media outlets” – basically, milan came up more than new york. i admit, after seeing the report on swide.com, which is a dolce & gabbana site- i thought it was a biased report. no bias found, the report was based on fact. the economy is referenced in the direct report of the top fashion capital rankings & its not soo hard to believe. while california has asked for a financial bailout, milan asked their government for a fashion bailout sometime last year. word is the fashion industry provides 80% of the jobs over in milan. i have a feeling that new york wont take this well, not like they can do anything about it- but i just dont think this will be well received. i cant believe it myself. whats even more questionable is the lack of colored models used in milan based designer fashion shows. brands like prada dominate the fashion game & with milan overthrowing new york as the fashion capital, where does that leave the industry. interesting reports may follow. more as reports & infromation develops.
